Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: Congress leader Pramod Tiwari on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s recent verdict regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, calling it an “initial victory” for the opposition. His remarks come amid ongoing political debate over the process and the role of the Election Commission.
Responding to the Supreme Court’s suggestions that documents like Aadhaar cards and ration cards be considered in the verification process, Tiwari said, “We consider this as our initial victory. They said that Aadhar card, Ration card and others also must be considered during the process and this is what we wanted.”
The Congress leader further cautioned the Election Commission of India (ECI) against resisting the court’s guidance. “If the Election Commission tries to oppose it, it will be slammed by the Supreme Court,” he said.
The SIR exercise in Bihar has been at the centre of political and legal attention, with opposition parties alleging irregularities and selective deletions from the voter rolls. The Supreme Court, while not staying the process, advised the Election Commission to incorporate broader identity verification measures and ensure transparency.
