PRAYAGRAJ — Amidst the ongoing language controversy in Maharashtra, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP-led alliance, accusing it of creating a divisive atmosphere to deflect attention from governance failures.
Speaking to the media, Tiwari said, “The BJP and its two allies — Shiv Sena and NCP — which betrayed their original parties, are polluting the social and political environment in Maharashtra. This controversy is being manufactured to hide the failures of the Devendra Fadnavis-led government.”
The row pertains to the now-withdrawn government resolutions (GRs) that had mandated the inclusion of Hindi as a third language from Class 1 in Maharashtra schools, sparking widespread criticism and protests. The move was seen by many as an imposition of Hindi in a Marathi-speaking state.
Tiwari reaffirmed the Congress party’s commitment to the three-language policy, saying, “Hindi is our mother tongue, English is the contact language, and in Maharashtra, importance must be given to the regional language — Marathi.”
He questioned the intent behind the government's move, stating, “What movement are you running apart from governance failure? This language issue is being used as a deliberate distraction.”
