Congress leader Pawan Khera on Tuesday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its response to opposition allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI). His remarks came in Gaya, Bihar, after BJP MP Sambit Patra and Union Minister Chirag Paswan defended the Commission’s functioning.

Khera questioned why BJP leaders had consistently come forward to defend the ECI whenever the opposition raised concerns. He alleged that the Commission appeared to act in favour of the ruling party, undermining its neutrality. According to Khera, such actions weaken democratic institutions and erode public confidence in the electoral process.

The comments add to the ongoing political exchanges between the BJP and the opposition on the role of the Election Commission. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have accused the ECI of not addressing issues related to voter rolls and electoral fairness. The BJP, on the other hand, has dismissed these allegations, claiming they are attempts to discredit independent institutions.
