Parliament has passed the National Sports Governance Bill and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, with the government terming the legislation a milestone in the country’s sports policy reforms. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the measures form part of a broader structural overhaul aimed at strengthening India’s position in global sports.

Mandaviya stated that the Sports Governance Bill envisions India’s athletes ranking among the top 10 globally within the next decade, and achieving a position in the top five by the centenary of the country’s independence. The legislation seeks to ensure an athlete-centric system, bringing transparency and accountability to sports federations.

Key provisions include fast and time-bound dispute resolution, increased representation for women in sports bodies, the inclusion of women in the Ethics Commission, and expanded opportunities for athletes with disabilities. The reforms are also expected to enhance governance within sports federations and encourage merit-based decision-making.

The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, passed alongside, strengthens the legal framework for anti-doping measures, aligning India’s sports regulations with international standards.
