Delhi: The proposed bill seeking removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers facing serious criminal charges has drawn sharp criticism from AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who termed the measure “unconstitutional.” He warned that the legislation, if passed, could pave the way for authoritarianism.

Owaisi argued that the bill raises fundamental questions about the balance of power in a parliamentary democracy. He asked who would be empowered to arrest a sitting Prime Minister or other high constitutional functionaries under such provisions, cautioning that the scope for misuse could be immense.

The Hyderabad MP alleged that the government’s intent behind introducing such measures was to consolidate control and create conditions resembling a police state. He asserted that his party would firmly oppose the bill in Parliament, contending that it undermines democratic norms and the principle of separation of powers.

The government, however, has maintained that the proposed law is intended to uphold integrity in public office and ensure accountability. Supporters argue that individuals facing serious criminal charges should not continue to hold top constitutional or political posts, as it erodes public trust.
