New Delhi: Opposition Vice Presidential candidate B Sudershan Reddy on Sunday voiced concern over what he described as the current challenges facing India’s democratic framework. Speaking on the state of governance, Reddy said that while the country continues to function as a constitutional democracy, it is increasingly operating under “strain circumstances.”

The nominee drew a contrast between earlier economic debates and the present political environment, noting that the conversation had shifted from a “deficit economy” to what he termed a “deficited democracy.” According to him, this phrase reflected growing unease about the health of democratic institutions and the functioning of checks and balances within the system.

Reddy clarified that his remarks did not imply that India had ceased to be a democracy. Instead, he stressed that the democratic structure remains intact but has weakened in its effectiveness due to mounting pressures and constraints.
