Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj has reiterated strong support for the proposed “One Nation One Election” reform, describing it as not just a policy but a comprehensive solution to the challenges posed by frequent elections in India. Speaking at a seminar held in Lucknow, Swaraj framed the proposal as a practical and economic necessity.
“Here I got a chance to attend the seminar on One Nation One Election. One Nation One Election is a policy, an idea and a solution in itself,” she said, emphasizing the strain repeated elections place on the national exchequer. “It is the solution to the increasing election expenditure, where 1.5 per cent of GDP is spent only on elections,” she added.
Swaraj claimed that the proposal enjoys broad-based political backing, with “32 parties supporting it.” She further accused 15 opposing parties of being driven by divisive motives: “There are only 15 political parties that do politics of hatred and are trying to mislead people due to their political interests.”
The idea of simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies has been a long-standing agenda of the BJP, which argues it would bring administrative efficiency and reduce the influence of constant campaigning on governance. Critics, however, argue it could undermine federalism and diminish regional voices.
