Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called upon all major political parties in Parliament to support the demand for restoring statehood to the Union Territory. In a public statement, Abdullah said he has written to parties with significant representation in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, urging them to raise the issue vocally in the ongoing session to ensure that a bill for statehood is introduced and passed.
"This is not about any one individual. This is not about any one party. This is not about the government. This is a promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Abdullah stated. He emphasized that the assurance of statehood was made publicly — in election rallies, in Parliament, and even in proceedings before the Supreme Court.
Abdullah compared the statehood demand to the recently conducted elections in the region, which were held following a directive from the Supreme Court that set a specific timeline. “A date was fixed and the elections were held within that date. We want the same for statehood,” he said.
He further warned that if the central government does not act promptly, legal intervention may once again become necessary. “If the government does not immediately grant statehood, then it will have to be granted by the court,” Abdullah asserted.
