As the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir elections approach, National Conference Vice Chief Omar Abdullah has raised critical questions about the lack of visible development in Jammu since the abrogation of Article 370. Addressing a public gathering in the Jammu North Assembly constituency, Abdullah pointed out the promises made by the BJP regarding the region’s development, which have yet to be fulfilled.

“When roads, hospitals, schools, and colleges were not constructed, BJP used to say that Article 370 is a hindrance to development. Now, five years have passed since the abrogation of Article 370, I want to ask—what development has happened in Jammu since then? What has changed here?" Abdullah questioned, challenging the BJP's narrative that removing the special status would lead to rapid progress in the region.

The abrogation of Article 370, which granted special autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, was a significant political move by the BJP-led central government. At the time, the party claimed that it would unlock development potential and lead to improved infrastructure and services in the region. However, Abdullah’s remarks highlight growing discontent among some local leaders and residents who feel that the promises have not been met.

Abdullah’s statement is likely to resonate with voters ahead of the elections, as concerns over infrastructure, healthcare, and education remain key issues for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference leader's comments reflect the political debates shaping the region as it moves toward another crucial electoral phase.
