Jammu: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting families affected by militancy and conflict, as he handed over appointment letters under the Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme (RAS), formerly known as SRO 43. The scheme provides government jobs to one eligible family member of an employee who dies in service, ensuring economic stability for households facing sudden and severe loss.
Speaking at the distribution event, Abdullah explained the purpose behind renaming and expanding the scheme, emphasising that it remains rooted in compassion and responsibility. “The scheme, earlier known as SRO 43, is now referred to under the RAS Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme. Under this, the government had promised that if a government employee passes away during their service period, one member of their family would be given a government job. This ensures that in such difficult times, the family does not feel abandoned,” he said.
He added that the initiative covers terror-affected families as well, offering crucial livelihood support during periods of distress. Abdullah noted that around 60 appointment orders from the Kashmir province had been prepared and formally handed over, mirroring a similar programme conducted in Jammu a day earlier.
