Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday firmly rejected allegations that the Sanchar Saathi cybersecurity app could enable government surveillance, asserting in the Lok Sabha that the platform is designed solely for citizen safety. His remarks came during Question Hour, amid ongoing debate over his ministry’s recent directive requiring smartphone manufacturers to preload the app on all new devices.
Responding to concerns raised by Opposition members, Scindia stressed that the app’s purpose is to empower mobile users by helping them safeguard their digital identity and prevent misuse of their telecom connections. “Sanchar Saathi app se na snooping sambhav hai, na snooping hoga,” he said, reiterating that neither surveillance is possible nor will it take place through the app.
The minister explained that Sanchar Saathi provides tools for identifying fraudulent SIM cards, blocking lost or stolen phones, and enabling users to take control of their telecom services. He underlined that the government’s intention is to ensure greater transparency and security in digital communication.
