Delhi: Priyank Kanoongo, newly appointed member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), expressed gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for entrusting him with the responsibility of protecting the human rights of Indian citizens.
Speaking on his appointment, Kanoongo stated, “I thank the President, Prime Minister, and Union Home Minister for giving me this important responsibility. It is a privilege to work towards the protection of human rights in the country.”
In his remarks, Kanoongo sharply criticized the Congress party for its alleged history of human rights violations, listing significant events as examples. "They (Congress) have a tradition of pre-determined exercises for human rights violations. Whether it is the 1984 Sikh massacre, their silence on the forced migration of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir, or the insensitive attitude towards people killed in Naxal violence, their record speaks volumes," he said.
He further emphasized that the NHRC's role is to protect human rights without bias or influence. "No certificate is needed from the accused of these human rights violations. Our job is to work for the protection of citizens' rights. The country has given us this responsibility, and we will fulfill it completely," he asserted.
Kanoongo’s appointment comes amid growing national and international focus on India's human rights framework. As a member of the NHRC, he is expected to play a significant role in addressing issues related to human rights violations and ensuring justice for the affected.
