Thiruvananthapuram — BJP leader and former Union Minister V Muraleedharan on Thursday lashed out at the Kerala government over a jailbreak incident in Kannur, calling it a result of “utter mismanagement” and political interference within the prison system.

Referring to the escape of a "dreaded criminal" from Kannur Central Jail, Muraleedharan said, “The incident of a dreaded criminal breaking the jail and escaping from Kannur prison shows the utter mismanagement.” He also highlighted the sensitive nature of the prison, stating that “Kannur jail is a prison where many CPI(M) workers convicted for murders are lodged.”

In a serious allegation, he claimed, “We have an incident perhaps unique in the country where a CPI(M) leader is a member of the jail advisory committee.”

Muraleedharan pointed to earlier reports of banned substances and contraband being found inside the jail, implying a pattern of lax enforcement and oversight. “There have been earlier reports that the police and authorities had confiscated drugs and prohibited items from Kannur jail,” he noted.

Calling for accountability, he urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to address the issue publicly. “The Chief Minister should break his silence. He should give convincing replies to the many questions that people have raised on this issue,” Muraleedharan said.
