Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella on Tuesday announced a landmark investment of US$17.5 billion in India, describing it as the company’s largest-ever commitment in Asia. The announcement followed his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the two discussed India’s expanding technological landscape and the country’s ambitions in the artificial intelligence sector.
Nadella shared the news in a post on X, calling the discussion with the Prime Minister “inspiring” and emphasising Microsoft’s role in supporting India’s transformation into an AI-driven economy. “Thank you, PM @narendramodi ji, for an inspiring conversation on India’s AI opportunity. To support the country’s ambitions, Microsoft is committing US$17.5B—our largest investment ever in Asia—to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India’s AI first future,” he wrote.
According to Nadella, the investment will focus on three key pillars: expanding AI-focused digital infrastructure, enhancing India’s technical workforce through large-scale skilling programmes, and supporting the development of sovereign AI capabilities to ensure secure and localised technological growth.
