Imphal, Manipur: IGP Intelligence K Kabib provided an update on the recent protests across Manipur, emphasizing the state police's efforts to maintain law and order amid escalating tensions. Over the past 24 hours, several protests were reported throughout the valley, including in Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Imphal West.
Kabib noted that many of the protests occurred peacefully, with rallies in most areas adhering to a non-violent approach. However, the situation turned volatile in specific locations, particularly in Imphal West, under the jurisdiction of Singamari and City Police Stations.
In the Kakwa Bazar area, protesters resorted to violent methods, including the use of firearms, while in Uripok, petrol bombs were reported. This violence resulted in injuries to over ten police personnel, including one Village Defence Force (VDF) member. The police responded by using tear smoke ammunition, leading to injuries among some protesters as well.
The IGP highlighted that a significant number of the protesters, particularly those involved in violent incidents, were not local residents. "Many of those detained, especially in Kakwa, were not from the area, indicating that individuals from other regions are coming in to incite local unrest," Kabib said.
The presence of non-local instigators in the protests underscores concerns about external influences exacerbating local tensions. The police are continuing their efforts to address the violence and restore order while investigating the involvement of these outside elements in the disturbances.
