Imphal | Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced that the Indian government is taking measures to regulate the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar, emphasizing that the process will align with international standards. The FMR currently allows unrestricted movement for residents of border areas within a 16-kilometer range.
Speaking to the press, Singh said, “The Indian Government is trying to regulate the FMR. Earlier, the Home Ministry mentioned issuing visas to Myanmarese nationals who want to enter India. They will be allowed only after obtaining a visa and passport. However, this is an interim arrangement.”
The Chief Minister acknowledged concerns raised by other northeastern states bordering Myanmar, many of which oppose the imposition of FMR restrictions. Despite this opposition, Singh assured that in the specific case of Manipur, FMR regulation would be implemented in accordance with international norms.
“I assure you that FMR in the particular Manipur area will be done through international norms, requiring a visa or passport, once the formalities are completed with the neighboring country,” he added.
