Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a series of emergency measures after Kolkata and nearby areas were hit by severe flooding following torrential rains.
In a statement on social media, Banerjee said the situation had worsened due to the unilateral release of water by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), inflows from the Farakka Barrage, and inadequate dredging in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. “On top of it all came this sudden, torrential rainfall,” she said, adding that officials and volunteers are working continuously to restore normalcy.
The Chief Minister declared that all government schools will remain closed, while colleges and universities will shut for the next two days. Private offices and government offices have been advised to operate on a work-from-home basis. She stressed that “saving lives is the top priority” at this stage.
