Mumbai, Maharashtra: Maharashtra Samajwadi Party president Abu Asim Azmi has expressed strong opposition to the ongoing removal of illegal loudspeakers from mosques in Mumbai, warning of potential street protests if the government fails to safeguard the religious practice of Azaan within legal boundaries.

Following a meeting with the Mumbai Police Commissioner, Azmi alleged that the law enforcement action against mosque loudspeakers was driven by political pressure. “He said there is a law and there is pressure from above. I said you are doing this only under the pressure from Kirit Somaiya,” Azmi stated, referring to the BJP leader known for campaigning against illegal loudspeakers.

Azmi contended that such crackdowns were unique to Maharashtra, remarking, “This is not happening anywhere in the country.” He underscored the need to find a solution that would allow the Azaan (Islamic call to prayer) to continue without violating noise regulations or other laws.

“If the government does not agree, we will take to the streets and hold a big agitation,” he warned, signaling a possible escalation of protests and political mobilization around this sensitive issue.
