The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, paving the way for a formal legislative framework to replace the recently promulgated Ordinance aimed at ushering in GST 2.0 reforms in the state. The Bill — focused on updating the GST regime in Manipur in line with national reforms — was taken up for discussion in the Lower House and subsequently approved despite vocal protests from Opposition members over concerns related to the Special Input Refund (SIR) mechanism.
The government stated that the amendment was necessary to ensure smoother implementation of revised GST procedures, promote compliance among businesses, and align Manipur’s taxation policies with evolving national standards. Members supporting the Bill argued that the reforms would strengthen revenue collection and enhance transparency, enabling more efficient tax administration.
