Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – Tension flared outside the Kerala Secretariat on Wednesday as members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) clashed with police during a protest march demanding urgent action on higher education issues, including the appointment of vice-chancellors in all state universities.

The protest, led by KSU—the student wing of the Indian National Congress—drew scores of activists to the heart of the state capital. As demonstrators attempted to breach security barricades near the Secretariat, police resorted to the use of mild force and water cannons to disperse the crowd and restore order.

KSU leaders accused the state government of administrative apathy and delaying crucial appointments in the higher education sector, which they claim is severely affecting academic and administrative functioning across universities. “The lack of full-time vice-chancellors is disrupting university governance, stalling key decisions and harming students' futures,” a senior KSU representative told reporters.
