Tamil Nadu: The much-anticipated Karthigai Deepam festival commenced today with the lighting of the Maha Deepam atop the Arunachala Hills in Tiruvannamalai, a significant spiritual event for devotees across Tamil Nadu. Thousands gathered at the Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple to witness the symbolic lighting of the sacred flame, which marks the beginning of the festival.
The lighting of the Maha Deepam, a towering beacon visible from miles around, holds deep religious significance for devotees, symbolizing the divine light of Lord Shiva. The event is a focal point of worship during the Karthigai Deepam festival, which celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.
However, this year’s celebrations have been marked by some restrictions due to a recent landslide in the region. Authorities have issued a ban on pilgrims attempting to ascend to the hilltop, citing safety concerns. The landslide, which occurred in the hilly terrain surrounding the Arunachala Hills, has led to the closure of several access points, ensuring the safety of devotees.
Despite this, the spirit of devotion remained high as devotees gathered at the base of the hill and the temple complex, participating in prayers and rituals to mark the occasion. The temple management and local authorities have arranged for live streaming of the event, allowing people from various parts of the state and beyond to witness the grand lighting of the Maha Deepam virtually.
The Karthigai Deepam festival, traditionally a grand event, will continue through the coming days, with devotees participating in various rituals and prayers to seek blessings for prosperity and well-being.
