Jammu — Union Minister Jitendra Singh reignited a historical and political debate on Thursday by asserting that India lost a crucial opportunity to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during the India-Pakistan war due to a unilateral ceasefire declared by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Addressing a gathering in Jammu, Singh said, “We must not forget that when the India-Pakistan war was going on, and our forces were in a situation to win the PoK back, it was the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru who declared a unilateral ceasefire on the Akashvani without consulting with anyone.”

His statement refers to the events of 1947-48, when Indian forces had made significant advances in Jammu and Kashmir during the first war with Pakistan, but hostilities were halted following a ceasefire brokered under the auspices of the United Nations.
