New Delhi: Janata Dal (United) leader Rajiv Ranjan Prasad expressed concerns over the draft resolution of the University Grants Commission (UGC) that reportedly curtails the role of state governments in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors. Addressing the issue, Prasad stated that while his party has not yet fully examined the draft, the information coming to light is worrying.

"We have not read the draft resolution of UGC in its entirety, but we also do not agree with the things that are coming out," said Prasad, highlighting his party’s reservations about the proposed changes.

He argued that limiting the role of elected state governments in such crucial appointments undermines their efforts in the education sector. "By limiting the role of elected governments in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors, the efforts of the state government in the field of education will be discouraged to a great extent," Prasad emphasized.

The JDU leader underscored the importance of state governments' active involvement in shaping the educational landscape and called for modifications to the draft. "The need for some amendments in it seems to be necessary," he added, signaling his party’s intent to advocate for changes to safeguard state autonomy in educational governance.
