Shimla: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has expressed apprehension over the Himachal Pradesh High Court's recent order to shut down 18 loss-making hotels of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC). He accused the state government of mishandling the tourism sector and hinted at possible privatization plans.
“I am curious about the High Court's order to close the hotels. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the condition of the tourism department was better than it is today,” Thakur remarked while addressing the media in Shimla.
Thakur voiced his concerns about the state government’s alleged intentions, stating, “The worrying thing is that the state government is calling certain people and preparing to hand over these hotels to private hands. This is a matter of concern for Himachal Pradesh."
Highlighting the importance of HPTDC hotels in supporting the state's tourism infrastructure, Thakur emphasized the need for a thorough review of the situation rather than resorting to privatization.
The Himachal Pradesh High Court's directive to close these underperforming hotels comes amidst financial struggles within HPTDC. The state government is expected to take decisive steps in addressing the issue while ensuring the tourism sector remains robust.
The opposition’s criticism sets the stage for a heated debate on the government’s approach toward public assets and its vision for the state's tourism sector. The issue continues to be closely watched by stakeholders and residents alike.
