New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh has strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he described as an extended silence on the recent escalation in India–Pakistan tensions and the subsequent conversation with US President Donald Trump. Ramesh questioned the credibility of the government's readout of the call and urged the Prime Minister to take opposition leaders into confidence.
“For 37 days, the Prime Minister said absolutely nothing,” Ramesh said in Delhi. “Now, we are suddenly told that he had a 35-minute phone conversation with President Trump, and there’s a readout from our Foreign Secretary on what was supposedly said.”
Ramesh pointed out a noticeable difference between the Indian readout and the statement released by the White House, suggesting that the discrepancies raise legitimate concerns. “President Trump’s statement and the Foreign Secretary’s version do not match. There’s mention that the PM told Trump that there was no role for mediation — but if that is true, why was the PM silent for over a month?” he asked.
Highlighting the need for transparency in matters of foreign policy and national security, the Congress MP urged Modi to convene an all-party meeting. “Why can’t the Prime Minister call a meeting tomorrow or the day after? Let him tell Opposition leaders face-to-face what exactly was discussed. If the Foreign Secretary’s statement is accurate, then repeat it before the political leadership of this country,” Ramesh asserted.
