Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has strongly defended his party amid ongoing controversy regarding Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar’s reported remarks on the Constitution. Responding to criticism, Ramesh accused the BJP of historical disregard for Dr. BR Ambedkar’s contributions and of politicizing the Constitution for its own agenda.

"Who insulted Dr. BR Ambedkar in 1949 by saying that his Constitution was not a Manuwadi Constitution? Who changed the location of Dr Ambedkar's statue from a prominent position facing Parliament to a corner in Parliament House precincts? Which Home Minister, on 17th December 2024, insulted Dr. Ambedkar?" Ramesh asked, taking aim at the BJP.

He further asserted that the BJP, not the Congress, has been responsible for undermining constitutional values. "Who has made religion the basis of citizenship? It’s the BJP, not the Congress," he said, referencing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Ramesh also highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s own words in the Constituent Assembly on November 25, 1949. "Dr. Ambedkar had said that the credit for the passage of this Constitution goes to the Congress. If there was no Congress, there would have been no Constitution."
