New Delhi, June 16: Samajwadi Party leader Ameeque Jamei has strongly criticized the Indian government’s recent diplomatic stance, calling its refusal to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)’s condemnation of Israeli airstrikes on Iran a “historical mistake.”
Speaking on Sunday, Jamei said India’s decision reflects a troubling departure from the country’s long-standing values and global positioning. “India has a big investment in Iran. They have been our friends for a long time. The concerns expressed by Omar Abdullah are everyone's,” he remarked, referring to the former J&K Chief Minister who also questioned India’s stance.
Jamei highlighted the presence of a significant Indian population in Iran, including workers, students in universities and medical colleges, and long-term residents. “With Israel's aggression, including attacks on nuclear facilities, this was the time to stand for peace, not to remain silent,” he said.
He accused the NDA government of aligning too closely with Israel at the cost of strategic relationships with Iran, Russia, and China. “We are the land of Gandhi and Buddha, yet their names are only taken for optics abroad. Why not support a ceasefire when lives are at stake?” he questioned.
India had refrained from endorsing the SCO's collective condemnation of Israel, citing diplomatic neutrality. Critics like Jamei, however, believe this position has damaged India’s legacy of supporting Palestine and non-alignment.
