New Delhi: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday announced a landmark energy agreement between India and the United States, marking the country’s first structured contract to source liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the US market. The development, hailed by Puri as a “historic first,” underscores India’s growing energy security outreach and its deepening commercial ties with the US energy sector.

In a post on social media, the minister said that Indian public sector oil companies have finalised a one-year deal to import approximately 2.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LPG for the contract year 2026. This volume accounts for nearly 10 per cent of India’s annual LPG imports—an indication of the scale and strategic significance of the agreement. The LPG will be sourced from the US Gulf Coast, marking the first time India has entered into a structured, long-term supply arrangement with the United States for this key household fuel.

Puri described the agreement as a major milestone for the world’s fastest-growing LPG market, noting that it opens the door for more predictable, diversified, and stable supply channels. “One of the largest and the world’s fastest-growing LPG market opens up to the United States,” he said, calling the deal a testament to India’s expanding global energy partnerships.
