New Delhi: Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said India has achieved a significant milestone in its semiconductor mission with the production of the first made-in-India chip from CG Semi’s pilot line. The announcement came during the Semicon India 2025 programme.
Vaishnaw recalled that the country’s semiconductor initiative was launched in January 2022, and within a short span, the first pilot line had already begun production. “Within such a short time, we have the first pilot line of CG Semi starting production now. I presented the first made-in-India chip from this pilot line to the Prime Minister today,” he said. He added that three more pilot lines are nearing completion and will begin production in the coming months.
Highlighting the speed of progress, the minister said the first permits for projects were cleared within 100 days, enabling an entire ecosystem to take root. He also underlined the country’s growing strength in chip design, noting that 20 chips designed by students were manufactured at the SCL facility in Mohali. “Design capabilities are exemplary, and the world is appreciating the large talent development program that we have taken to 78 universities,” Vaishnaw said.
The minister also announced the creation of the “India Deep-Tech Alliance,” with close to a billion dollars already committed. While it begins with semiconductors, the alliance will expand to other advanced technology sectors requiring venture capital for growth.
