New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal minimum temperatures across most regions of the country during January 2025. The announcement comes as the country experiences varying winter patterns, influenced by climate trends.
According to the IMD, "Monthly minimum temperatures are most likely to be above-normal over many parts of the country, except some parts of east, northwest, and west-central India where normal to below-normal minimum temperatures are likely."
This forecast indicates a warmer winter across large portions of India, deviating from traditional expectations of cold January temperatures. Regions in the east, northwest, and west-central India, however, could still experience temperatures consistent with or slightly below seasonal norms.
The IMD’s outlook is based on advanced weather models and long-term climatic analysis. Above-normal temperatures are often attributed to changing climatic conditions, including the weakening of cold waves in certain regions and urban heat effects.
For regions expecting above-normal temperatures, this could mean milder nights and shorter spells of severe cold. Conversely, areas with below-normal temperatures may see more traditional winter patterns, including potential cold waves.
