Shimla, Himachal Pradesh | The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall and severe cold day conditions across multiple districts of Himachal Pradesh for December 27 and 28. Light rain has begun in low-lying areas, while snowfall has started in mid and high-altitude regions such as Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Kinnaur, Sirmaur, and Shimla, according to Senior IMD Scientist Shobhit Katiyar.
"Heavy snowfall is also expected tomorrow. An orange alert has been issued for December 27 and 28 in many districts due to heavy snowfall and severe cold day conditions," Katiyar said. He also warned of hailstorms, rain, and lightning in Solan and Sirmaur districts.
Tourist destinations such as Kufri and Narkanda are experiencing light snowfall and are expected to continue seeing snow in the coming days, adding to their winter charm. However, authorities have urged travelers to exercise caution due to the challenging weather conditions.
As the cold wave intensifies, the IMD predicts thick fog and frost in lower plains, including Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba, from December 30 to January 1. These conditions are likely to disrupt daily life and visibility in affected areas.
Local authorities have advised residents and tourists to stay updated on weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during the orange alert period. Precautionary measures are being taken to ensure public safety, and emergency services are on standby.
