Gangtok — The Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated rescue and relief operations in Sikkim after torrential rains triggered widespread landslides and floods, severely affecting the northeastern state. The natural calamity has cut off several remote areas, leaving hundreds stranded and vital infrastructure damaged.

The IAF confirmed on Monday that it has successfully airlifted the first batch of civilians from Chaten in North Sikkim, one of the worst-hit regions. With roads blocked and communication lines down, air evacuation has become the only lifeline for many affected residents and tourists.

“Despite challenging weather and terrain, our personnel were able to rescue the initial group of stranded civilians from Chaten,” said an IAF spokesperson. “Efforts are ongoing to reach other isolated pockets and provide essential aid.”
