Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that affects people of all age groups, has raised concerns in India with recent cases reported from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The virus, which is recognized globally, can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like discomfort to severe respiratory complications, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
According to health authorities, including the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), routine surveillance is being conducted to monitor the spread and impact of the virus. While HMPV is not new, its presence in multiple states underscores the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures.
Human Metapneumovirus(HMPV) is transmitted through respiratory droplets, similar to other common respiratory viruses. Symptoms include fever, cough, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath, which may escalate to pneumonia or bronchitis in severe cases. Without a specific vaccine or antiviral treatment currently available, medical experts emphasize the importance of practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, using masks, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.
Healthcare providers recommend early medical intervention for those experiencing severe respiratory symptoms. They also advise high-risk groups, including young children and older adults, to remain vigilant.
