New Delhi | A five-member High-Level Committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Desai, convened at Gujarat Bhawan in New Delhi today to deliberate on drafting a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Gujarat. The meeting focused on key objectives, scope, and procedural aspects of the proposed legislation.
The committee engaged in substantive discussions regarding the comprehensive review of existing personal laws and the potential impact of the UCC on Gujarat’s legal framework. Emphasizing an inclusive approach, the members stressed the importance of consulting various stakeholders, including legal experts, religious leaders, and civil society representatives.
Aiming for a balanced and well-structured legal reform, the committee outlined its vision for drafting a UCC that ensures uniformity while respecting constitutional principles. The findings and recommendations of this high-level panel will be submitted to the Gujarat government, which is keenly awaiting the report to shape future legal policies in the state.
