In a poignant statement marking the 40th anniversary of the Anti-Sikh riots, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has called out the Congress party for its failure to take responsibility for the atrocities committed against the Sikh community in Delhi. During a press conference, Puri recalled the tragic events of 1984, stating, “It is 40 years today when the genocide against my community took place in Delhi. 3,000 people were killed in cold blood.”
Puri emphasized the importance of recognizing the nature of the violence, stating, “I don't call them riots because riots imply a two-way thing. They were carried out by targeting one community.” He pointed out that the Congress party has yet to issue a meaningful apology for the events that unfolded, further expressing his disappointment that a figure widely held responsible for the violence remains a member of the Congress Working Committee.
He concluded by condemning the party, saying, “All I say is that they should be ashamed of themselves... The Congress party is completely responsible for the atrocities committed against my community in Delhi in 1984.”
The remarks come as the nation reflects on the painful legacy of the riots, highlighting ongoing calls for justice and accountability for the victims and their families. Puri's statement underscores the deep scars left by the tragedy and the continuing demands for recognition and reparations from the Sikh community.
