Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has constituted a five-member committee, headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, to examine the necessity and framework for implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. The committee will assess the potential impact of a UCC and draft a proposal, which is to be submitted within 45 days. The state government will review the findings before making a final decision.
The announcement comes as part of broader efforts by several states to revisit personal laws and move towards a more uniform legal framework governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, irrespective of religious affiliation. The formation of the committee signals Gujarat’s proactive approach in contributing to the national debate surrounding the UCC.
Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi emphasized that the government remains sensitive to the concerns of tribal communities, whose customs and traditional laws will be safeguarded. “We assure that tribal customs and laws will be protected. The aim of this exercise is to foster unity while respecting the diversity that defines Gujarat,” Sanghavi stated.
