AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has apprehended Deepesh Gohel in connection with an espionage case involving sensitive information about Indian Coast Guard ships stationed at Okha Jetty (JT). The ATS revealed details of the case in a press briefing led by SP K. Siddharth.
Gohel, who has worked as a welder near the Okha JT for the last three years, came under scrutiny after he developed a Facebook connection with a Pakistani individual named Sahima seven months ago. “He later discovered that Sahima works for the Pakistan Navy. She asked him for names, details, and movements of Coast Guard ships at Okha JT,” SP Siddharth stated.
The accused allegedly agreed to provide the information in exchange for a payment of Rs. 200 per day. Over the past seven months, bank transactions amounting to Rs. 42,000 were traced to his account.
According to the ATS, Gohel was fully aware that sharing such information was illegal and a threat to national security. A case has been registered under sections 61 and 148 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Official Secrets Act, related to criminal conspiracy against the state.
"The Gujarat ATS is committed to ensuring that any activity jeopardizing national security is dealt with swiftly and strictly," SP Siddharth affirmed.
The investigation continues, with authorities probing the extent of the information leaked and possible involvement of other individuals. The arrest underscores the importance of vigilance in securing sensitive locations and preventing espionage activities.
