Bambolim, Goa: In a decisive move to defuse growing unrest among medical professionals, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant met with protesting doctors at Goa Medical College (GMC) and announced the acceptance of all seven demands placed before the government. The doctors, who had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum, have since called off their strike following the meeting.
“Yesterday I had a meeting with the doctors. They presented their demands to me, and I passed all seven of them,” said CM Sawant during his interaction with media. The protest was triggered by concerns over safety and working conditions, particularly after a spate of incidents involving threats and aggression towards healthcare workers.
In response, the Chief Minister assured stronger administrative oversight and enhanced security measures. “Such incidents should not happen again,” he emphasized. “The committee handling such issues will now be headed by the Secretary of Health, Dean of Medical Services, and the concerned Head of Department.”
Further addressing the doctors' key concerns regarding personal and patient safety, Sawant announced immediate deployment of security personnel at critical points within the hospital. “A Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) will be posted at the police outpost, and 50 additional police personnel will be deployed at the casualty ward, emergency department, and ICU,” he added.
