Kolkata, West Bengal: All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Wednesday emphasized the need to protect genuine voters’ rights in West Bengal, urging the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral rolls.

Speaking to the media in Kolkata, Mir said, “The common view is that a genuine voter should not be excluded from the voter list under any circumstances. We've just made a suggestion through the court... The Election Commission should refer to the election that happened after 2008.”

Mir argued that the Commission should take lessons from previous elections, especially those held after the 2008 delimitation exercise, to address current issues surrounding voter registration and exclusion. “The Election Commission should address the issue that is becoming a genuine concern for voters in Bengal. If they want to ensure that as many voters as possible are registered, that is their duty,” he said.

He added that referring to electoral practices followed in the post-delimitation period could “provide some relief to people” and restore public confidence in the democratic process.
