Srinagar, J&K: Amid protests over the reservation policy in Jammu & Kashmir, Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir has called for a caste census to bring clarity and equity to the reservation system. Addressing the issue, Mir emphasized the importance of understanding the socio-economic composition of different castes to ensure that reservations benefit the truly deserving.
"The Congress party has adopted the agenda that a caste census should be conducted first," Mir stated. "It is crucial to know how many people belong to which caste and what they do. Without this, there is a risk of inequities in the system."
Mir highlighted that socio-economic disparities exist across all castes, noting that "upper castes also have poor people, and there are creamy layers within the OBCs." He stressed the need to ensure that reservation benefits do not disproportionately favor the well-off segments within disadvantaged groups while neglecting those in need across all castes.
The call for a caste census aligns with growing national discussions on revisiting reservation policies to make them more inclusive and targeted. Protests in J&K over the reservation policy have brought renewed attention to the need for data-driven decisions in addressing socio-economic inequalities.
Mir’s remarks reflect the Congress party's stance on prioritizing a caste census to create a more balanced and just system. As debates on reservation continue, his call underscores the significance of comprehensive data in shaping equitable policies.
