By A Staff Reporter — At the Chanakya Defence Dialogue, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized the integral relationship between security and nation-building in contemporary society. "The contemporary paradigm of 'nation building' also largely converges on some similar defining parameters, some of which have been spoken of earlier in the day today," he noted, highlighting the multifaceted efforts required for effective nation-building.
General Dwivedi pointed out that security remains a consistent link throughout various lines of effort in this process. He referenced historical examples that underscore the importance of security in fostering national development. "We have all been witnesses to various manifestations that have brought up the relevance of this linkage," he stated, citing the inclusive development of South Africa following apartheid and the remarkable progress of Rwanda after its genocide. "Today, Rwanda stands as a beacon of progress in Africa," he added, illustrating how effective security measures can lead to significant advancements.

He further discussed the implications of prolonged insecurity, drawing from the experiences of Iraq and Afghanistan. "These examples highlight the dire consequences of instability," he explained, emphasizing the necessity of security for sustainable development. General Dwivedi also referenced the collective security mechanisms implemented by the European Union, which have enhanced development in member states.
Additionally, he pointed to the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistan, which has enveloped itself in a downward spiral due to its reliance on terrorism as a state policy. "Examples of nations succumbing to economic debt traps, and in turn compromising on sovereignty, also stand out as relevant pointers," he concluded, urging stakeholders to recognize the vital role of security in nation-building efforts.
