Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Tuesday addressed students and faculty at the 75th foundation day celebrations of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, where he underscored the importance of self-reliance across critical sectors for India’s future.

Highlighting technology vulnerabilities, Adani said India imports nearly 90 per cent of its semiconductors, warning that any disruption or international sanction could paralyse the country’s digital economy. He also pointed out that 85 per cent of India’s oil is imported, making the nation’s energy security highly sensitive to global geopolitical events.

Turning to data flows, Adani stressed that information leaving India’s borders becomes “raw material” for foreign algorithms, generating overseas wealth and strengthening external dominance. In defence, he cautioned that dependence on imported systems places aspects of national security under the political influence of other countries.

Calling for what he described as a new struggle for freedom, Adani urged the youth to embrace “Atmanirbharta” or self-reliance, stating that true independence would only come when India achieves resilience in technology, energy, data sovereignty, and defence capabilities.
