New Delhi — Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday expressed concern over what he described as growing public doubts about the impartiality of the Election Commission of India (ECI), and criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from Parliament amid ongoing proceedings.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi stated, “The whole nation is worried about the impartiality of the Election Commission and its right to vote. At a time like this, the Prime Minister is out of the country. When Parliament proceedings are ongoing and when we are seeking discussions, he is on a foreign visit. This shows his sensitivity towards the matter.”

Gogoi further alleged that the Election Commission is facing increasing politicisation, with its recent actions being viewed with scepticism by the public. He pointed to the example of Assam, stating, “We saw all this in Assam 2.5 years ago. Delimitation was carried out throughout the state to benefit the BJP in both Lok Sabha and assembly elections.”

The delimitation process, which involves redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies, has previously been contested in Assam by opposition parties who argue that it favoured the ruling party.
