Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that the body failed to adequately address concerns raised by opposition parties regarding electoral integrity. His remarks come amid heightened political exchanges between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition over the functioning of the poll body.
Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said safeguarding democracy, protecting the right to vote, and maintaining the impartiality of the Election Commission were essential to upholding the constitutional framework envisioned by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He claimed that the opposition’s efforts were aimed at ending what he described as “vote chori,” or electoral malpractice, while suggesting that certain vested interests wanted such practices to continue.
Referring to the Election Commission’s statement a day earlier, Gogoi argued that it had raised more questions than it answered. He alleged that the Commission either lacked clear responses or was unwilling to provide them, particularly in relation to issues raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition parties.
