Panama City, Panama: On a visit aimed at fostering cultural and educational diplomacy, the Group 5 delegation of Indian MPs visited a premier university in Panama City, where they engaged with students and faculty on the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaking at the event, the leader of the delegation, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, emphasized the timeless relevance of Gandhi’s ideals in today’s global context. “For us, today, it is very important that we come to the University which shapes the minds of the young people of Panama,” he said, highlighting the role of education in sustaining values of peace, justice, and global solidarity.

Tharoor urged the students to grow up “not only with respect for the ideals and service of Mahatma Gandhi but also with respect for the valiant struggle he waged not just for peace but for freedom of our country.”
He recounted Gandhi’s historic role in India’s independence movement, calling him a towering figure who overcame two centuries of colonial oppression through the power of truth, non-violence, and love. “He is known as the Father of our Nation… Mahatma Gandhi is an inspiration — both for the values he represented and for his successful fight against those forces that were enslaving our people,” Tharoor adde
