In a recent statement, French Navy’s Carrier Air Wing Commander Guillaume Denis shared his insights on the comparison between France's Rafale fighter jet and the anticipated Chinese 6th-generation aircraft. While acknowledging the evolving nature of military aviation, Denis focused on the capabilities of the Rafale, emphasizing its proven design and adaptability.
“6th generation aircraft is a bit of a dream right now,” Denis remarked, referring to the futuristic concepts surrounding next-gen fighter jets. “But when it comes to 5th generation under Rafale, it’s a different story.” He continued, “Rafale is a subjective topic. It’s not stealthy, but it has been built from the very scratch to be able to do all the missions at the same time, which is one of the features of the 5th-generation aircraft.”
Denis highlighted that one of Rafale’s key strengths is its versatility and continuous upgrade potential. "We are able to upgrade it every two years," he noted, underscoring the French jet's capacity to stay relevant in the fast-evolving landscape of modern warfare.
The Carrier Air Wing Commander also pointed to Rafale’s advanced Meteor air-to-air missile system, calling it “probably one of the best missiles you can find in the world.” The Meteor missile has been a significant advantage for the Rafale, enhancing its range and lethality in air combat.
However, when it comes to China's 6th-generation fighter aircraft, Denis remained cautious. “Right now, it (6th generation aircraft) is only on paper,” he said, suggesting that much of the technology and capabilities surrounding 6th-gen jets remain speculative. This highlights the gap between current operational platforms like the Rafale and the futuristic models under development.
