Kolkata, West Bengal: Commenting on the political crisis in Bangladesh, former Chief of Army Staff General Shankar Roychowdhury (Retd.) stated, "If a neighbouring country has widespread disturbance, it is a cause of concern for us. It's a challenge and we have to be very careful."
General Roychowdhury identified the main reason for the protests as the demand to abolish reservations for the next generations of Mukti Yoddhas. He emphasized, "Interference is not our business... We have got to secure our borders. We cannot allow our country to be threatened- internally and externally."
He also hinted at possible international influences behind the unrest, noting, "There can be international influence behind what happened." Addressing the recent developments, he remarked, "Sheikh Hasina has resigned as the PM of Bangladesh and has been given safe conduct out of her own country... India also wants to see her leave the country."
