Kolkata | In a significant development in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe into the post-poll violence cases in West Bengal, a court on Wednesday delivered the first conviction. A retired school teacher has been found guilty of raping a nine-year-old girl in Malda district, officials confirmed.

The case was among the 61 heinous crimes — including cases of murder and assault on women — that were handed over to the CBI following the violence that erupted across several districts of West Bengal after the declaration of the 2021 assembly election results.

According to officials, the convicted individual committed the crime during the wave of unrest that followed the fiercely contested polls. The incident not only highlights the brutality of the post-poll violence but also underscores the trauma faced by vulnerable communities during the period of political instability.
