Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, June 24 — The ongoing 'Halla Bol' agitation by the United Farmers’ Struggle Committee entered its ninth consecutive day on Monday, as hundreds of farmers remained camped at Gangasingh Chowk in Sri Ganganagar, demanding 2,500 cusecs of irrigation water from the Ganga River.
Raising concerns over the acute water shortage affecting crops and livelihoods in the region, protestors have vowed to continue their sit-in until the state and central governments heed their demands. “Our fields are drying up. Without adequate irrigation water, we face total crop failure,” said a farmer leader addressing the crowd.
The protest has steadily grown in intensity, prompting authorities to deploy additional police forces and increase surveillance in and around the demonstration site. Barricades have been placed and riot control personnel have been kept on standby as a precaution.
Farmer unions have warned of a complete district shutdown if the water allocation issue is not addressed soon. The protest has drawn support from various agricultural bodies and local residents, who see the demand as crucial for the region’s agrarian economy.
