Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Wednesday warned that the rapid spread of fake news—especially AI-generated deepfake videos—poses a serious danger to India’s democratic framework. Addressing the Lok Sabha, he said the government is taking the issue “very seriously” and is preparing a set of new rules aimed at curbing misinformation at its source.

Vaishnaw noted that the widespread availability of generative AI tools has made it easier than ever for malicious actors to create convincing deepfake content. Such fabricated videos and manipulated narratives, he said, not only mislead citizens but also erode trust in institutions, individuals, and the electoral process.

“The government is working on framing new rules for controlling fake news and AI-generated deepfake videos,” the minister said, adding that the administration is simultaneously strengthening institutional mechanisms to detect, flag, and remove false information more efficiently.

He emphasized the need for strict action against individuals and entities responsible for creating and distributing misleading content. According to him, a coordinated approach involving technology platforms, regulatory bodies, and public awareness initiatives will be essential to effectively counter the threat.
